Arewa Consultative Forum Distances Northerners From Jonathan’s 2015 Bribery Moves

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has declared that Northerners must be counted out of an alleged plot to bribe prominent Northerners in order to weaken opposition to President Goodluck Jonathan’s bid for re-election in 2015.
The ACF stated that it had widely consulted prominent Northern political figures, adding that they all denied being part of scheme to accept cash from Mr. Jonathan in order to back his 2015 presidential re-election bid.
In a statement sent to SaharaReporters and signed by its chairman, Aliko Mohammed, the ACF said: “The attention of the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, has been drawn to stories circulating in the media lately suggesting that some people said to be working for the Presidency are going about with a long list of names of Northern leaders they wish to induce in order that they will support the President’s re-election in 2015. The so-called list which we have seen does indeed contain names of some of the most respected people in Northern Nigeria.”
But the Forum absolved the Northerners on the list. “We have however made enquires within the government and have spoken with many of the people whose names are on the list and they confirmed to us that they know nothing whatsoever about it. No one has met them nor are they are interested in meeting any one on the issue,” the group stated.
The ACF continued: “Those seeking or advising the President to offer inducement in exchange for support are clearly taking the matter of the President’s re-election away from performance in office to something else. If that is the case, they will be well advised to leave Northern leaders out of it.”
