BMW Scandal : Defiant Oduah Says She Will Not Quit - PM News, Lagos

Nigeria’s embattled aviation minister, Stella Oduah, will not resign and those who claim the House of Representatives had called for her resignation or sack should go back to school, she said on Tuesday in Lagos, southwestern Nigeria.
Oduah said federal lawmakers had neither indicted her nor called on President Goodluck Jonathan to sack her.
Rather, she said, what the House recommended was for the presidency to review some of the things in the aviation sector.
The minister, who inspected remodelled facilities at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, was asked by a journalist if she would resign following federal lawmakers recommendations to President Jonathan.
She replied, ” I think it means you don’t read or you probably don’t understand English because I read it too. What is there is that Mr. President can and should review. That is what they said there. Probably, you should go back to school.”
Oduah’s statement left a mammoth of journalists who had thronged the airport bewildered.

The Nigerian House of Representatives last week endorsed the report of its Committee on Aviation, which had indicted Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, over the purchase of two BMW cars at the hefty sum of N255 million.

The House endorsed the report at a Plenary last Thursday.
The report concluded that for approving cars that were not budgeted for in 2013 and for an amount far above the approval limit of the ministry, Oduah had broken the law.
It said the minister committed the breach by approving expenditure of over N643 million for the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to procure 54 vehicles this year.
The House noted that her approval limit as a minister was N100 million.

The House asked President Goodluck Jonathan to decide whether he should continue to retain her services as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
A major recommendation of the committee, which was adopted, read, “The House urges the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to review the continued engagement of the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, for having contravened the Appropriation Act, 2013 and the approved, revised threseholds by exceeding the Ministry of Aviation’s approval limit of N100m by the purchase of 54 vehicles valued at N643m.”
The endorsement of the report by the House elicited a prompt response from Oduah, who described the action as premeditated and with a hidden agenda.
“We are shocked and disappointed that in spite of the deluge of representations and evidences provided by the Aviation Minister, Princess Stella Adaeze Oduah and all invited stakeholders on the matter, the House would reach conclusions that have only confirmed that there was a hidden Agenda in the entire exercise from the beginning,” said Joe Obi, Odua’s spokesperson.
Speaking on the remodelled airport, Oduah assured that the airport would be commissioned before the end of first quarter of 2014.
“We want to be able to start the usage of all these facilities by first quarter of next year. What is very key is that passenger travelling experience will be very very different,” Oduah said.

She added: “It will be the way it should be; it means you have the comfort, you have the safety and you have the security and most importantly as you’ve seen we’ve increased the capacity which means you have ample space to really do what you are supposed to do.”
On the national carrier, she said she encountered a bit of a challenge.

“We are trying to rectify that challenge. I think we will do it very soon but the important thing is that we want to give Nigerians a national carrier that we all aspire to have. That that will be a true representation of all of us, that that can be bought from the market. That that will be professionally and efficiently managed,” she said.
She didn’t go into details about the challenge, told journalists they don’t need to know about the issue.

Churches Cancel Christmas Night Services In Borno, Yobe States

SirBayubay gathered that churches in Borno and Yobe States, fearing Boko Haram violence, today cancelled Christmas Eve night services.
The situation is said to be the same in some military and police barracks, where activities are highly restricted.
Rev. Yakubu Ibrahim, a Christian leader in the troubled North-East of Nigeria, the hotbed of the Boko Haram insurgency, confirmed the service cancellation to our reporter by telephone from Maiduguri.
“We have decided not to hold our service because of security challenges and cancelled night Church service because our security cannot be guaranteed.
Few Christmases back we had similar experiences where our members were killed, some even during service in the morning. With the present situation, it is not possible.

“Our members are scared and so we cannot take chances. Presently we are in a very terrible situation; many of our people have been abducted and killed. And so we are just surviving by the grace of God pending when we will overcome this persecution.”
Another clergy in Yobe State, Pastor Audu Tanko, described the same situation.
“We are in our homes and will only hold service in the morning but [have] cancelled Christmas night service of songs,” he said.  “It is not our wish but we have no choice.”
Military sources in both Maiduguri and Damaturu said the security situation has not normalized as is being claimed.  They told us that troops of both the Air Force and the Army are still been deployed in view of Boko Haram’s sophistication and well-coordinated attacks, citing the example of the assault of December 2, 2013.

Why I converted to Islam – former actress Vivian Metchie opens up

Recently divorced Nollywood actress Vivian Metchie says she recently adopted the Islamic faith because she found the Christian faith too confusing. Speaking with Yes! magazine on her conversion, Ms Metchie said it was a personal decision she had to take… “Yeah it is personal. I understand the Koran more than the bible. All of a sudden, the Christian confusion was driving me nuts. My dad was catholic, my mum was Deeper Life, I married someone in the Redeemed Church and then all of a sudden, the few religions had something bad to say about each other. I just couldn’t take it anymore. A friend of mine who is close to me said that once you are grounded on the word, it wont be confusing. Unfortunately, maybe I wasn’t grounded in the word, but I still could see what I see. But in my quest and study and research, I don’t know: I was probably looking for peace. Yeah! That was what I was looking for and I found it in the Koran”. The mother of 4 who has adopted Fareedah as her muslim name says her decision was well received and respected by her dad who has since stopped calling her by her native name and now calls her Fareedah.

Controversy over missing money in banker’s crashed car

A worker with Diamond Bank, Gwarimpa, Benjamin Idim, who died in a car crash at Utako, Abuja last week, was said to have about N2m in his car, but the bulk of the money has yet to be recovered. Benjamin, 23, was believed to have lost control and crashed his Kia Soul car at midnight while coming from a visit to a friend. He reportedly died at the scene of the accident and his body and the wrecked car were evacuated by the police. Benjamin’s remains were buried in Calabar last Saturday. About N800,000 and two phones said to have been recovered from the car were given to the parents of the deceased by the police, but family members and friends contended that Benjamin had about N2m in the car. A friend, who identified himself simply as Kunle, said the late banker kept the money with him before he collected it later in the day. He said, “Benjamin actually kept the money in my
locker. Though I don’t know the exact amount, I am sure it was more than N1m. It was therefore a
surprise when we heard that the police recovered only N800,000.” The father of the deceased, Ita, said he and his wife were out of the country when they got a call that their son had died in a fatal car crash and his corpse was being kept in a mortuary. He added that he returned to the country immediately. He said, “We went to the police at Utako and they handed over two phones and about N800,000, which they said was recovered from the car. Later we learnt that the money in the car was more than the amount the police gave us. “The bank also confirmed that he had more than that amount with him. If the police can hand over N800,000, you can be sure he had more than that in the car. The Nigerian Police Force can’t give all the money they recovered.” According to him, the boy plans to give N1m to his mother for the Christmas celebration and spend the rest on other things. The bereaved father described his son as a careful driver who did not indulge in alcohol or drugs, adding that he was a devoted Christian and a chorister. “To tell you how devoted he was as a Christian, his girlfriend wanted him to drive her to the airport, but he declined to do so because he had choir practice at that time,” Ita said. When our correspondent visited the Idims at the house, hundreds of
people thronged the home to condole with the family. A condolence register opened for him had been filled up with touching messages by his friends, former school mates and colleagues.

More Details Emerge on Ace Video Director Sesan Father Mr Sesan Ogunro’s Murder

You must have heard about the sad demise of the father of prolific video director and Beat Fm OAP Sesan & Fade Ogunro. He was killed by armed robbers on Sunday and more details have emerged on the circumstances which led to his murder A family source told Pm News the deceased had prepared to leave the event around past 9 p.m when his assailants accosted him. He had come out of the event, only to find that his family members, who came in a Toyota Yaris carwere engaged in an argument with some people, who were demanding for phones and money. When he moved closer, the hoodlums faced him, also asking for his car keys, phones, money. Ogunro’s hesitation to succumb to their demands was thought to have infuriated his attackers, who eventually shot him at close range. According to our source, the expended bullet shell found around the scene suggested Ogunro must have been shot with a locally-made gun. After the attack, the killers were said to have thrown out Ogunro’s son and grandchildren from the rear of the car before speeding off. They were also said to have abandoned the car they originally came in, which is now in the custody of the police at the Alausa Police Station. P.M. News investigation further revealed that aside the church event, aprivate party was simultaneously taking place at a nearby event hall, thereby booming the road with various cars. This paper could not ascertain if adequate security measure was taken by the organisers to check intruders. Our source also stated that the slain Ogunro was first rushed to the Lagoon Hospital on Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja, before he was transported in an ambulance to the hospital’s headquarters in Apapa for special attention. “You know because he was shot with a dane gun, the pellets spread all around his stomach and perforated his internal organs. I Found Christ That’s Why I’ve Been Off The Scene – Charles Okafor

Just incase you’ve been wondering where actor Charles Okafor has been all these while, no need to worry any more, he’s finally broken his silence. In a chat with The Entertainer, Charles said he’s been off cos he found Christ. Charles said: I’ve been lying low for a while because I diverted into Advocacy and human-angle films as a consequence of my new found faith.  I’m still a career actor and a film maker but I am mindful of the scripts I do. A time come in the life of any professional when he seats back and takes stock of his professional issues and the legacy he wants to leave behind from the spiritual standpoint of view. You cannot just do any kind of film anymore if you’re going to be the light to the nations of the world. We must be seen in the context of the things that glorify God in totality. I’m driven to do advocacy films because they address social issues, human angle and spiritual issues that borders on the kingdom.  That explains why I might not be as visible as I was some years back. You see, you cannot eat your cake and still have it. You cannot serve God and serve Marmon. You must clearly define where you stand. I have put my hands to the plow so I shouldn’t look back but that does not remove the fact that I’m still a career actor and film maker,”
