People have purchased 2.1 million PlayStation 4 units worldwide since Sony debuted the console two weeks ago, the company announced via Twitter on Tuesday. Sony thanked fans by saying "we couldn't have done it without you."
The next-generation console went on sale in North America on Nov. 15; Sonysold 1 million PlayStation 4 units on that first day. It then went on sale in 20 European countries and Australia on Nov. 29. Now, the console is available in 32 countries.
The PS4 is sold out on major online retailers like Amazon and Best Buy. Meanwhile, GameStop and Walmart stores sold out of the console on Black Friday. You can still purchase a PS4 on eBay for around $600 or more — much higher than the $399 retail price.
Microsoft has not released updated sales figures for its Xbox One, which hit shelves on Nov. 22 in 13 countries. The console did sell 1 million units in the first 24 hours, however.
Microsoft did release this statement Tuesday:
“We are humbled and gratified by the overwhelming response from our fans to the launch of Xbox One. Eleven days in we are seeing record breaking sales and are selling every Xbox One we can make. Demand is far exceeding supply in the 13 countries we’ve launched and we are sold out at retailers around the world. We are seeing incredible usage from our engaged fans who have purchased Xbox One with more than 50 million hours spent on Xbox One games and entertainment.” - Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President of Strategy and Marketing, Xbox
